Breed History

It is often said that the English Toy Spaniel originated from ancient Japan. However, it is more popular in Britain and has existed since the time of Mary Tudor.

Popularly known as royal dogs, the English Toy Spaniel has been a favorite of royals including Mary, Queen of Scots. It was also favored by Queen Victoria and King Charles II.

History has it that King Charles so loved this breed of dogs that he passed a royal edict declaring that the English Toy Spaniel be allowed entry into every public space within the whole of Britain. Thus, it earned the name “The King Charles Spaniel”.

Temperament

The English Toy Spaniel is usually quiet and reserved, especially towards strangers. They may keep their distance around strangers and may act unusually calm.

However, they are also very affectionate towards their owners and people they like. Their reclusive yet affectionate nature makes them the perfect lap dog and companion.

They are also known for being happy and playful. However, it should be noted that the English Toy Spaniel could also be very mischievous when they want to be. As such, they require a lot of energy to keep up with their antics.

Environment

The English Toy Spaniel is best suited for apartments. That is, they should be placed indoors and not in an outdoor dog house. Although this breed of dogs is not very active when compared to other breeds, they enjoy a short walk every now and then.

They also love to run in yards so a small yard will be ideal for them. It is important to note that dogs which belong to this breed do not fare well in hot or extremely hot weather. Thus, they should not be taken out in this kind of weather and should be kept indoors instead.

Exercise

Fortunately, the English Toy Spaniel does not require strenuous exercise. They enjoy walks in cool or moderate weather.

However, it can alternatively play indoors or in the yard. As a result of this breeds reclusive nature, dogs belonging to this breed have a pretty straightforward exercise need. Owners can simply take them on a walk every now and then.

In the same vein, experts suggest that the English Toy Spaniel can easily adapt to the activity level around it. Thus, if it belongs to an active family, it could adjust to active exercise routines such as running or playing fetch.

On the other hand, if it belongs to an inactive family, it could be content with minor exercises.

Grooming

The English Toy Spaniel has a long, flowing and silky coat. It equally has an abundance of hair which covers its frame.

As such, it requires regular grooming in order to keep its fur healthy. Grooming can be done twice or three times a week.

The grooming process is quite simple as it involves merely brushing the fur regularly in addition to weekly baths. Although the English Toy Spaniel may shed excessively, there is absolutely no need to trim its fur.
