Breed History
The English cocker spaniel is one out of two breeds of the cocker spaniels. Formerly known solely for its hunting ability in the early 19th century. It derived its name from its usage over the years hunting the Eurasian woodcock birds with their immense sense of smell.
Temperament
The English cocker spaniel is an enthusiastic and adventurous hearted dog. A cheerful pooch that can be very active and adaptable to environment changes.
This particular breed of dog will be more than eager to join in on activities and adventures with its owner that comes its way be it a walk down the block or a distant trek, the English cocker spaniel is always motivated.
This dog is great in the family setting and is considered rather intelligent which makes it good around children. If given enough exercise and activity, the cocker spaniel would remain lively and healthy.
Environment
The cocker spaniel was originally bred to hunt so it leaves little to doubt that they are quite the wanderers. This dog does not necessarily need a big yard to move about like other roaming dogs.
It can do perfectly well indoors with the occasional walk but it should never be left alone. The English cocker spaniel is very much adaptable to environments as mentioned earlier and can easily tolerate such changes.
However, a fence or an enclosed space would be necessary as this mutt does have the innate tendency to explore its environment even to the extent of leaving home.
Exercise
The English cocker spaniel is very energetic and is almost always eager to roam. Quite a bit of activity is necessary to keep this dog mentally and physically healthy be it indoors or outdoors. A walk around the block and some other casual activities are perfect for exercise. Generally, about 3hours of exercise is needed per day to keep the cocker healthy.
Grooming
Grooming the cocker can be somewhat cumbersome due to its long silky fur. This could require a lot of grooming. The cocker spaniel should be brushed daily since it’s quite an active dog. This should keep it clean and free from bacteria and matted areas on the coat.
The dangling ears are an important place to take note of when grooming this pooch due to particles that can get in contact with it; being from feeding to mud from the yard, such can build up bacteria if not properly maintained.
The English cocker spaniel should be bathed at least once twice a month unless there are visible signs of dirt on the silky coat. Shampoo for humans should not be used when grooming the coat. Use products designed for dogs so as to avoid harsh treatment on the coat.
