American Staffordshire Terrier

American Staffordshire Terrier

The American Staffordshire Terrier is a particularly muscular breed that may just be the Hercules of its kind. They are strong for their size but this doesn’t make them hostile or aggressive. They are really sweet and super cuddly, especially around their human owners. This breed offers sunshine and rainbows wherever they find themselves, either playing on the couch, running in the yard, or when they’re out for a jog with their owners. They’re actually eager to please, making their training a lot easier than other breeds.  Discover more about our American Staffordshire Terrier puppies for sale below!

Brief History

As you’d probably see in their features, the American Staffordshire Terrier looks like a bulldog. This is because they are a mixed breed between bulldogs and Terriers. This mixed breed hails from England and has earned many names due to its mixed heritage. The American Staffordshire Terrier was originally used by hunters to retrieve wild boars and while the butchers used them to manage their bulls, the farmers used them in the farmlands.

It didn’t take long for their strengths, resilience, and courage to be noticed after which they were used in blood sports like bear/bull-baiting and dogfighting. These sports were later outlawed but the reputation the breed earned in the process was in tune with violence and aggression. These dogs migrated to America as of 1850 and earned their names officially became American Pit Bull Terriers as stipulated by the UKC in the 20th century.

Temperament

This breed has been widely accepted and celebrated as a family dog. They are visibly elated whenever they are with their owners and humans in general. They love playing in yards, going jogging with their owners or cuddling up with children. Although they can be used as guard dogs, they still shower this much affection around strangers.

Contrary to this and because of their muscular physique as well as their Pitbull heritage they are believed to be aggressive, hence, intruders become intimidated and desist from such homes. Many people who own this breed claim that the American Staffordshire Terrier is a great judge of character as they know the extent of people’s intent, thus contributing to their portfolio as great watchdogs. However, with great power comes an even greater responsibility hence owners of this breed do have to be assertive and confident especially when handling them on a leash and during physical training.

Environment

This breed doesn’t do so well in the cold as they would do in the heat, hence during winter seasons you’re going to have to provide warmth for them. The American Staffordshire Terrier can adapt fairly to environments and apartment buildings too. However, they are house dogs and love the suburbs. They love walks to the park, running in the barn or backyard and they can be left alone without a worry. Nevertheless, this breed would be happiest on a farm or a location with a lot of space to play.

Exercise

A casual walk with an American Staffordshire Terrier could easily turn to a run if the owner isn’t firm enough. This breed strains on the leash until trained otherwise. They have a pretty high energy level and while some American Staffordshire Terriers may make do with a casual walk, others require a full vigorous training. They love jumping and chasing birds can be very playful which constitutes this drive. Also, owners should ensure that their yards are fenced to prevent them from wandering off. Without enough exercise, they may display traits like digging, barking continuously or chewing on furniture which owners may not appreciate. Their agility is pretty high and they are at their optimum selves after a daily exercise routine.

Grooming

Adopting a dog doesn’t go without having their evidence (dog hair) on your furniture. However, this breed doesn’t shed as much, hence it makes the cleanup easier. In fact, they shed heavily twice in a whole year just as the seasons change The American Staffordshire Terrier is quite easy to groom. Weekly showers work just fine with this breed. They don’t have long fur hence brushing can also be weekly to keep the coat shiny. However, this breed tends to have bad breath so their teeth should be brushed at least twice weekly, while their nails can be trimmed as they grow.
