A Boxer is a dog that can steal anyone’s heart. But before checking out Boxer puppies for sale, take a look at these downsides of owning one.

If you are not a very active person then you might reconsider a Boxer. It needs to get out and play or run. Your Boxer could only develop health issues such as obesity if you don’t take it out for a walk or run. If you live in a small apartment then you might have trouble dealing with a boxer. Aside from needing a lot of space to exercise, it could bark loudly and cause a nuisance.

A Boxer may not easily tolerate hot and cold temperatures though so before taking a walk, find out how hot or cold it is before you take it out. Still want a Boxer for a pet? Then it must be time to check out Boxer puppies for sale.

  • German Shepherd Puppies for Sale

Okay, ladies and gentleman! The breed we will be focusing on today is the fiercely intelligent and loyal German Shepherd Dog! Not only has this breed been a beloved pet of Americans for many years, it has even been number two on AKC’s most popular breed list in 2014! We love the German Shepherd (I mean, come on, have you seen those precious ears?) and we hope you enjoy the interesting facts below! Petland always has German Shepherd puppies for sale!

    1. Surprise, surprise…the Germans standardized the breed, but wait, there’s more!

It was 1889 when a breeder by the name of Max von Stephanitz saw a sable and black “wolf-like” dog and was impressed by its intelligence and discipline. He immediately bought the dog and started the first German Shepherd Dog club. The club’s motto was “utility and intelligence” with looks and confirmation a distant second.

As Germany became more industrialized, von Stephanitz realized he had to find a way to maintain the GSDs relevance for all time. Because of their keen intelligence and eagerness to please, they were a perfect fit for both police work and service workers. And that’s why you still see the breed working in law enforcement to this day! Thank you, Max von Stephanitz!

    1. The German Shepherd Dogs were big-time movie stars.

Most everyone knows the story of the GSD puppy who was rescued from a bombed-out kennel in France during World War I and rose to Hollywood stardom in the 1920s. But Rin Tin Tin wasn’t the first GSD to become a movie star. He was preceded by a retired police dog, Strongheart.

The on-screen heroics of these two superb dogs were the first glimpse of this incredible breed for most Americans. Handsome as any movie star, Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart had other qualities, like courage, athleticism, and brains, that made them irresistible—the kind of rugged heartthrobs who could do their own stunts. They catapulted the breed to the top of the popularity charts, and people are still writing books about Rin Tin Tin to this day.

    1. Their heroism knows no bounds.

German Shepherds will do anything for their owners, protecting their loved ones is their number one priority! Even GSDs with no training whatsoever have taken bullets for their owners, dash through the wilderness to get help, and plunge into raging waters to drag drowning children to safety. When you have a German Shepherd Dog, you have a bodyguard for life!

Well, we certainly hope you liked learning more about this wonderful, family-friendly breed!

  • Maltese Puppies for Sale

Greetings, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the next segment of our breed blogs! Please kindly don your crowns and jewels as we talk about the most aristocratic and richest breed of dog in all the land, the incomparable Maltese! Now, you may think that the Maltese is just a fluffy lap dog, which is actually mostly true, but they also have a long and fabled past. Read along with our blog to find out more about this curious little breed. Petland always has Maltese puppies for sale, just check out our available puppies page!

    The Maltese is how old??

Even though the Maltese is a fairly well-known breed, people are often surprised at how long ago their origins can be traced. As one of the oldest breeds still in existence, The Maltese is said to date back over 2800 years and have graced the laps of Ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. Even their very coats were especially bred and prized by Romans, as the color white was considered sacred. Ancient Egyptians built elaborate tombs for them. And in Greece, they were often painted on ceramics and in murals to depict their popularity. That’s a lot of love!

    Royalty comes with its perks!

The Maltese were the favored dogs of queens and royalty alike, such as Marie Antoinette, Mary Queen of Scots, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria. They were often fed out of golden dishes and wore real diamond collars! That popularity among the rich and famous has continued into modern times as well. The richest (yes, richest) Maltese in history, named “Trouble”, was bequeathed nearly $12 million by her owner, real estate magnate, Leona Helmsley in 2007! I would definitely call that a perk!

“And though they be but little, they are fierce!”

You may think that because of their diminutive size, the Maltese is not athletic, but you would be incorrect! The Maltese is an excellent jumper and has little fear of gravity, making it prone to grabbing things high up and getting on couches and beds. They are also described as being loving and gentle, as well as fearless and loyal to their owners. Although, this makes them a little wary of strangers, so introducing new people can be a slow process.

    That coat, tho.

Maltese are technically non-shedding or hypoallergenic, which is sometimes confusing to people. They don’t have fur like other dogs, they have hair, which can still fall out, but is more like humans losing hair throughout the day. Because of that hair, they don’t carry dander like other dogs, which is what people tend to be allergic to when it comes to man’s best friend. However, on the flip side, their hair grows continuously and requires daily brushing to prevent mats and monthly haircuts to keep their hair short.

Well, we hope this breed blog was as interesting to you as is was to us!

It sheds a lot so expect to vacuum your floor, carpets, car, sofas and beds more often. It is not for people with allergies. Pomeranians have a few health issues and may even become overweight so owners should monitor their feeding times.

  • Shih Tzu Puppies for Sale

Hello lovelies and welcome to our newest breed blog! We hope you’re ready and raring to go about our latest subject, the mysterious, yet lovable, Shih Tzu! We’ve done several breeds already, but this one really tugs at our heartstrings! This breed has been around for a very long time and once you take a look at this blog, you’ll know why! Petland always has Shih Tzu puppies for sale, just check out our available puppies page!

The Shih Tzu is formally the Tibetan Shih Tzu Kou.

Contrary to popular belief, the Shih Tzu does not originate in China, but in Tibet. The Tibetan monks considered the Shih Tzu holy and kept them in their temples. The Shih Tzu worked alongside the monks, functioning as alarm or guard dogs and even turning prayer wheels in daily Buddhist rituals. They were then sent to Chinese emperors as gifts, thus giving them their Chinese name. In the Chinese language, Shih Tzu means “Lion Dog”, as much for its features as its strength of character. They also earned the moniker of “chrysanthemum-faced dog”, which refers to the way the hair grows outwards from the center of the dog’s face.

Shih Tzus have been around the block, a couple times.

As one of the oldest breeds in existence, the Shih Tzu’s origins are shrouded in mystery and it’s hard to pin down exactly when they came about. The earliest definitive traces of the breed are Chinese paintings circa 500 AD and also documents describing these dogs being gifted for the second time from China to the Byzantine Empire. Much later, they became the official breed of the illustrious Ming dynasty, who kept them as pets for the royal family for centuries. However, the Shih Tzu very nearly went extinct in China after the Communist Revolution.

Sooooo, how did they get here, in America?

Because the breed was declining in China, a few citizens of the U.K. wanted to preserve the breed by importing them into the country in the 1930s. This importation essentially saved the breed, as all modern day Shih Tzus can be traced to the original 14 dogs brought from China to England. It was actually American soldiers who brought the Shih Tzu back to America after World War II, where they quickly gained popularity amongst the people. The Shih Tzu breed was then recognized by the AKC in 1969 and currently holds 20th place for most popular breed in America.

We think this blog has been extremely informative and we hope you have too! Stay tuned for our next blog coming soon!

  • Yorkie Puppies for Sale

The Yorkshire Terrier is the 6th favorite breed in America and for good reason! These pint-sized pups are as feisty as they are lovable and they have a very interesting past. Read along as we increase your breed knowledge with these fun facts about the Yorkshire Terrier! Here at Petland, we always have Yorkie puppies for sale!

    1. Yorkies Were One of the First Registered Breeds in the AKC
Even though the Yorkie is not a particularly old breed, these teeny dogs were one of the AKC’S original breeds. Yorkshire terriers became registered in 1885 along with a few other favorites like the basset hound, beagle and bull terrier.
    2. Yorkshire Terriers are Born Exterminators
While today the Yorkie is popular as a companion breed, they started out originally in the 1800s as being effective ratters. Over the years, the Yorkshire Terrier breed has became slightly smaller, but no less tenacious! We think the Yorkie still retains that innate feistiness that made them great exterminators.

    3. The Father of the Yorkshire Terrier Was a Show Champion
Yorkshire Terriers descend from several similar terrier breeds, some of which no longer exist, such as the Black-and-Tan Terrier. But the one dog considered the father of the breed was a champion show dog named Huddersfield Ben. He lived only six years, but won more than 70 prizes and sired many Yorkies, laying the foundation for the breed.

    4. The Yorkshire Terrier Used to Be Called By a Different Name
When the breed was in its infancy, the Yorkshire Terrier was called the Broken Haired Scotch Terrier, Broken Haired Toy Terrier or simply Toy Terrier. It was around the 1870s before the name Yorkshire Terrier was adopted to regard the place where the breed began.

    5. Smoky the Yorkie Was a World War II Hero
An American soldier fighting in the Pacific during World War II found a Yorkshire Terrier puppy lost in a foxhole. He named her Smoky, and she went on to become an American war hero. At first, Smoky visited injured American soldiers, making her one of the first therapy dogs. She later advanced to even more tactical work, stringing communication lines between outposts in the Philippines.

    6. Rapunzel, Anyone?
Yorkies are part of the non-shedding group, so they rely on their owners for grooming. Their hair is similar to a person’s and it will continue to grow, sometimes up to two feet long! And while show dogs will have the much longer, breed-specific cut, most owners keep their Yorkies in a “puppy cut” to keep from having the daunting task of brushing out the coat several times a day.

    7. Yorkshire Terriers, a Loyal and Loving Breed
If you have ever been around a Yorkie, you know that their bravery and boldness know no bounds! They may be small (unbeknownst to them, of course), but they have the countenance of a large breed dog and will protect their owners at all costs. Last year, a 6-pound Yorkie in New Jersey even chased off a hungry bear that wandered into the dog’s home and threatened its owner!

Because the Yorkie is so popular (and has been for many years!), we try to have this breed in our store at all times, all you have to do is check our available puppies page to see our Yorkie puppies for sale! Want to know more about the Yorkie? Check out our breed info page!
